Why Do My Sinuses Feel Drier at Night? Tips for Better Sleep

Man sleeps uncomfortably due to dry sinuses.

You may breathe comfortably during the day only to notice that your nose feels dry, irritated, or congested as soon as you settle into bed. Dry sinuses at night are common, particularly when environmental conditions or nighttime breathing habits reduce moisture in the nasal passages.

At New York ENT in New York City, board-certified otolaryngologist Dr. David O. Volpi draws on more than 30 years of experience diagnosing nasal and sinus conditions and helping patients find solutions based on the underlying cause.

Why Does Nasal Dryness Get Worse at Night?

Your bedroom environment can play a major role. Heating systems during a New York winter and air conditioning during warmer months both reduce indoor humidity. Spending several uninterrupted hours breathing this dry air can leave the delicate tissues inside your nose irritated by morning.

Dehydration may contribute as well. Because you typically go hours without drinking while asleep, nasal dryness can become more noticeable overnight.

Could Mouth Breathing Be Part of the Problem?

If nasal congestion makes breathing through your nose difficult, you may unconsciously switch to mouth breathing while asleep. This can leave you waking with both a dry nose and a dry mouth or throat.

Persistent mouth breathing can sometimes indicate an underlying nasal obstruction rather than simply a dry environment. Allergies, a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates, or other structural concerns may restrict nasal airflow and deserve further evaluation.

Does CPAP Cause Dry Sinuses?

Some people using CPAP therapy for obstructive sleep apnea experience nasal dryness or irritation, particularly when airflow isn’t adequately humidified. A heated humidifier may help make treatment more comfortable.

However, don’t discontinue or adjust prescribed sleep apnea therapy without discussing the problem with your healthcare provider. Persistent congestion or nasal obstruction can also make CPAP more difficult to tolerate, so an ENT evaluation may be helpful.

How Can You Prevent Dry Sinuses While Sleeping?

A few changes may help you maintain nasal moisture overnight:

  • Use a clean humidifier to add moisture to dry bedroom air.
  • Stay adequately hydrated throughout the day.
  • Try a saline nasal spray or rinse before bedtime.
  • Consider a moisturizing nasal gel for persistent dryness.
  • Avoid excessive use of decongestant nasal sprays, which can worsen nasal problems when overused.

If symptoms repeatedly return despite these measures, treating the underlying cause may provide more effective relief than simply adding moisture.

Occasional nasal dryness is usually manageable, but frequent dryness, crusting, nosebleeds, congestion, or difficulty breathing through your nose deserves attention. Dr. Volpi can evaluate your nasal passages to determine whether environmental dryness, inflammation, medication use, or structural obstruction may be contributing.
